Fuel Efficiency in India — km/L Explained

In India, fuel efficiency is measured in km/L (kilometres per litre), which is the distance a vehicle travels on one litre of petrol or diesel. The Bureau of Fuel Efficiency (BEE) and ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) publish official km/L figures for all vehicles sold in India. Indian fuel prices are quoted in ₹ per litre and vary by city and fuel type (petrol, diesel, CNG). A typical fuel-efficient hatchback in India achieves 18–22 km/L, while an SUV typically returns 12–16 km/L.
