How Thumbnails Work
YouTube stores thumbnails on its CDN at i.ytimg.com. Every video automatically has several resolutions: maxresdefault (1280×720), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and three time-based previews (1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg).
Best Resolution
The highest available resolution is maxresdefault.jpg at 1280×720 pixels (16:9 HD). Not all videos have it — older or less popular videos may only have hqdefault.jpg at 480×360. This tool automatically shows which resolutions are actually available.
