About the Pomodoro Technique

What Is It?

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. Named after a tomato-shaped kitchen timer (pomodoro = tomato in Italian), it breaks work into focused 25-minute intervals followed by short 5-minute breaks, with a longer 15–30 minute break every 4 sessions.

Why It Works

The technique leverages time-boxing to reduce the impact of internal and external interruptions on focus. Knowing a break is coming lowers anxiety. The physical act of "winding the timer" creates commitment. Regular breaks prevent cognitive fatigue and maintain sustained high performance throughout the day.

Classic Schedule

  • 25 min — Deep focus work
  • 5 min — Short break
  • Repeat 4× then…
  • 15–30 min — Long break
  • Start new set of 4

Tips for Success

  • Write down your task before starting
  • Silence all notifications
  • Honor the break — step away
  • Track interruptions; reschedule
  • Adjust intervals to your flow
