What is Morse Code?

Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of two different signal durations — called dots (·) and dashes (−). It was developed in the 1830s by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail for use with the electric telegraph. Each letter, digit, and punctuation mark has a unique combination of dots and dashes. Despite being over 180 years old, Morse code is still used today in aviation, amateur radio, and emergency signaling.

How to Use the Morse Code Converter

  1. Text → Morse: Type or paste any text and click Convert to Morse. The output shows the encoded Morse string, a visual dot-dash pattern, and audio/flash controls.
  2. Morse → Text: Switch to Morse → Text mode. Enter Morse code using . for dots and - for dashes. Separate letters with a single space and words with / or a double space.
  3. Use Play Audio to hear the Morse code using the Web Audio API beep tones.
  4. Use Flash Light to see the Morse code as a visual light signal — useful for learning.
  5. Adjust speed in WPM (words per minute) using the slider (5–40 WPM).
