What Are Time Zones?

Time zones are regions of the Earth that observe a uniform standard time. The world is divided into 24 main time zones, each roughly 15° of longitude apart, based on the rotation of the Earth. The baseline is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), formerly known as GMT. Most time zones are offset from UTC in whole hours (e.g. UTC+5:30 for India), though some use 30- or 45-minute offsets (e.g. India at UTC+5:30, Nepal at UTC+5:45).

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many countries adjust their clocks forward by one hour in summer to make better use of daylight — this is called Daylight Saving Time (DST). The US, most of Europe, Australia, and others observe DST, while countries near the equator (India, China, Japan, most of Africa) do not. This tool uses your browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API, which automatically accounts for DST transitions for all IANA time zones.

IANA Time Zone Database

This tool uses the IANA Time Zone Database (also called the tz database or zoneinfo), the global standard used by all major operating systems, programming languages, and browsers. Zone names follow the format Continent/City (e.g. America/New_York, Asia/Kolkata, Europe/London). There are over 600 named zones in the database.
