How to Calculate a Tip

Calculating a tip is straightforward: multiply the pre-tax bill amount by your tip percentage, then add it to the bill to get the total. For example, a 15% tip on a ₹1,500 bill is ₹1,500 × 0.15 = ₹225, making the total ₹1,725. When splitting among multiple people, divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of diners to find each person's share.

Tip Percentage Guide by Country

• India: Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated. 5–10% is common at restaurants; 10–15% for good service. Not expected at dhabas or street food stalls.
• United States: 15–20% is standard; 20–25% for excellent service. Tipping is a core part of service worker income in the US.
• United Kingdom: 10–15% is customary at restaurants. Check if a service charge is already included before adding more.
• Europe: Tipping is less expected but appreciated — rounding up or leaving 5–10% is common in most countries.
• Japan / South Korea: Tipping is generally not customary and can sometimes be considered rude.

How to Split a Bill Fairly

• Equal split: Everyone pays the same share of the total bill including tip — simplest for groups where everyone ordered similarly.
• Itemized split: Each person pays only for what they ordered plus their proportional share of the tip and tax — fairest for groups with very different orders.
• Round up: Rounding each person's share up to the nearest whole number ensures the tip is fully covered and simplifies cash payments.
